Expert Tips

  • For best results do not overcook the eggs as it will give the yolk a greenish tint.
  • Instead of boiling the eggs on the stovetop, you can boil them in an instant pot.
  • A good idea is to mash up leftover deviled eggs and make an egg salad sandwich.
  • When you remove the eggs from the boiling water you can place them in an ice bath or bowl of ice water to cool them completely.
  • Instead of a small spoon, you can use a piping bag, plastic bag, or ziplock bag with the corner of the bag snipped to easily pipe in the egg yolk mixture for a pretty, swirled topping.
  • You can use a slotted spoon to take the eggs out of the cold water before peeling.
  • Cooling the hard-boiled eggs makes them easy to peel so do not skip this step.
  • Eggs are fragile so slice them with a sharp knife to avoid tearing them.
  • Instead of a hand mixer, you can mash the yolk mixture with a fork.
  • You can make this easy deviled egg recipe a sweet relish or more savory. Instead of mayonnaise, add Dijon mustard or yellow mustard, blue cheese, plain Greek yogurt, or sour cream with lemon juice or pickle juice to the egg yolk mixture. Instead of dill, sprinkle with cayenne pepper, paprika,  fresh chives, shallot, Cajon spices, and bacon for that extra pop of flavor.

How to Store leftover deviled eggs

  • Place leftovers in an airtight container or plastic container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • You can’t freeze a whole boiled egg, as the egg whites will become tough, rubbery, and inedible. However, you can freeze cooked egg yolks for the devilled egg filling for up to 3 months.
