Keep a sustainable kitchen with croutons!
Croutons are a great way to reduce waste in the home, especially in your kitchen. Using all of your ingredients before they go bad can be quite the challenge. Making homemade croutons from stale bread is a great way to get the most use from every ingredient!
To use more ingredients, feel free to toss the bread in grated parmesan cheese just before baking. The cheesy crisp will add flavor to your salads and soups, or just regular snacks.
Key Ingredients:
A few slices of old bread do the trick for this super easy recipe. Whether it’s sandwich bread, hot dog buns, or a whole loaf of bread you forgot.
Olive oil for flavor. I recommend using high-quality olive oil, or melted butter as a rich alternative.
Garlic salt to simplify the seasoning process: both garlic and salt in one container!
Dried parsley, or any of your favorite herbs to add delicious flavors.

How to make Croutons with Herbs
Step 1: Prepare
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
Step 2: Cut and season
Cut the leftover bread into small cubes and put them on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with garlic salt and herbs, then drizzle with olive oil.
Step 3: Toss and bake
Toss until all the ingredients have evenly distributed. Bake at 350F for 25 minutes.
Expert Tips:
- Customize the herbs to your taste. Use dried herbs, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, or dried rosemary if you’d like. I do not recommend using fresh herbs, dried herbs will bake better for croutons.
- For some extra flavor, use sourdough bread to make sourdough croutons! They will add a fun twist to your soups and salads.
- Use high-quality extra virgin olive oil for a rich taste and a golden, crispy finish on the croutons.
- Use a garlic-infused oil for more flavor in these croutons! Feel free to toss in a little bit of chili oil for spice, or other flavors you like.
- Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on the baking sheet to avoid overcrowding, ensuring each crouton gets crispy.
- Allow the croutons to cool on the baking sheet after removing them from the oven; this helps them become even crunchier.
- Make gluten free croutons out of gluten free bread all the same with this recipe!
Recipe FAQs
Dried parsley, thyme, rosemary, and oregano are popular choices, but feel free to experiment with your favorite herbs.
Keep an eye on the baking time. Check on the croutons after 15 minutes, then once more at the 20 minute mark. Remove from the oven when they are golden brown but not overly hard.
Seasoning before baking ensures the flavors penetrate the croutons. But a light sprinkle of additional herbs after baking can enhance the fresh flavors!
