Ingredients

  • ½ grapefruit
  • 1 Tbsp rum (skip if cooking for children)
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar

Topping:

  • 1 Tbsp whipped cream (or vanilla yogurt)
  • 1 tsp roasted cashews, chopped

Instructions

  • Cut the grapefruit in two.
    Halved grapefruit.
  • Make a shallow cut around the edge of the grapefruit, this will make it easier to eat.
Removing the inside of halved grapefruit brûlée with a knife.
  • Drizzle with rum, then sprinkle with sugar.
Sprinkling brown sugar atop grapefruit halves in a white dish.
  • You can either use a kitchen torch to melt and lightly brown the sugar, or broil in the preheated broiler for about 5-7 min until the sugar is melted and beginning to turn dark amber.
Torched or broiled grapefruit halves in a white dish atop a wire rack.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla yogurt and roasted cashews.
Freshly made grapefruit brûlée atop a plate with a spoon.

Notes

  • I tested both techniques in cooking the sugar to make the brûlée topping: the broiler method cooks the grapefruit a bit and makes it less sour.
